"It never ceases to amaze me how I can think I really know someone and yet remain unaware of the intricate constellation of family stories and influences that are shaping their experience, thoughts and destiny. I have the great fortune to be a lifelong friend of Andreaā€™s and to share with her many aspects of life, including being born into the year of the firehorse, and yet in working with her on this project I discovered a new interconnected world of narratives running through her matrilineal family line. In any family there is that which can be spoken and that which remains unspoken, or in shadow. The remarkable Annie Rollins brings this shadow world of the powerful realms of silence to life. I watched with astonishment as Andrea and Annie found ways to express and articulate the internal and sometimes hidden lives of three generations of women through the subtext of dance and shadow. Working with Annie Rollins, Andrea Nann, and the incredible artist Cindy Mochizuki on Firehorse and Shadow has been both joyful and surprising and has made me consider again the profound intersections of fate and personal choices that act on our lives."

Dance artist Andrea Nann is joined by shadow puppeteer and theatre artist, Annie Katsura Rollins, in this new experiential interactive web performance that collaboratively investigates what binds and holds family members together, and ultimately what frees and heals the family line.

Firehorse and Shadow explores family lineage with a focus on the dualistic yin and yang elements expressed within the bodies, lives and choices of three generations of women. Working against and alongside the hearsay of family stories and Chinese medicine cycles and charts of astrological animal signs, two performers weave together passages of remembering and forgetting, inviting the audience into an intimate reanimation of familial memory.

Firehorse & Shadow was commissioned by CanAsian Dance for its 2020 KickStart program.

The creation of this work was generously supported by the Dance Artist in Residence program at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and by National Ballet of Canada's CreativAction Open Space program.
